Every morning at 6:30 am, I open the balcony window while brushing my teeth and see so many people jogging, exercising & walking!! I call these people fitness freak. When I look at them every morning, I feel even I should put some efforts. But I just cannot help my laziness; my sleep overpowers my enthusiasm for morning walks. So, I stand in the balcony for a good 10 mins watching people.
I wash off the thought of waking up early in the morning for a walk as I splash cool water on my face. Our day normally starts with a cup of tea, though it’s scorching hot outside we love to have tea. It’s the morning family ritual as later everyone gets busy in their own life. The day passes by cooking food, daily chores with added up spicy gossips.
As the sun sets and so does the temperature, I step out for a walk. This is the time when kids are back from school & happily playing downstairs. And I have always seen a group of young girls in some corner of the building gossiping and giggling. Every time I look at them, one girl would be sharing some secret with others. Then by the time I walk ahead I see people returning from work, most of them tired with that content look ‘one more day in that office came to an end’!
As I step on the walking track, I see my favorite people among all I have seen till now, kids, young girls, office people. These are a group of old men, as they grew old once a handsome and strong guy now is cute and weak one. I just love to watch them, and I have noticed they love to watch girls jogging on the track. With those dim-lit eyes sitting behind spectacles they watch every girl passing by with huge smiles. Must be revisiting younger days when the girls would look back and smile at them. I am new to evening walks so these bunch of old fellows don’t know me yet.
I continue walking, and enjoying sparrows chirping, a rare cool breeze, lads cycling, married mid 30’s ladies brisk walking to go back to their original sizes and the old guys sitting on benches most of the time discussing politics and their families. They know me by face now. I don’t know if they comment on me yet, I hope not. It takes me 15mins for the round, I try for 3 rounds of the entire track before settling down on the bench for a breather. I have selected a bench opposite to the place where my favorite old guys sit.
So, I don’t look them in eyes, but they know I sneak peek at them. Some days they are very enthusiastic and share hellos with passer-byes, I like them that way. They give high five to school kids, namaste to mid-30 ladies also inquiring what they had for lunch. And obvious cute drooling smile to young girls jogging. I wondered if I should smile at them.
Every day when I step out for the evening stroll, I used to think of smiling at them but somehow, I couldn’t. But I liked sitting on my thoughtfully selected bench for 15mins to breathe in some more fresh air. One day while walking and just when I was about to pass old fellows, I remembered a joke to which I couldn’t stop laughing, but the old guys thought I smiled at them and so they smiled back. Wow!! I was so happy; the thing I wanted to do was so simple. I was very happy, finally, we all smiled.
So, now we smile every day; I have changed my bench and I share the bench with old guys.
Good one
